The Day-Date is the one Rolex where the cheap homages have to do something genuinely harder: show the day of the week. A fluted bezel and a president bracelet are stamped parts, but a true day-date complication is a real movement cost, and it is why this category starts near $100 instead of $40. The original — the 128238 — is 36mm, and here is the pleasant surprise: the one that gets that size right is not the expensive one. Four watches, ranked on our fidelity rubric.

The size-correct one is the mid-priced one

On most icons, the homage that matches the original's proportions is the one you pay up for — that is the whole argument of our Datejust page, where the only 36mm option costs four times the budget pick. The Day-Date inverts it. The single 36mm watch in this field is $148, while the lowest-scoring entry here is $245. If proportions are what you care about, this is one of the rare cases where caring costs you nothing.

The other thing to read before price is the movement line. Three of these four run an actual day-date calibre — a Seagull ST16, a Seiko NH36A, a Miyota 8285 — and that complication, not the bezel, is where the money goes.

1. Pagani Design PD-1752 — the only one at 36mm Amazon ↗

About $148, fidelity 82 — the highest here. It keeps the 36mm President proportions the original is built on, with the fluted bezel, a president-style bracelet, and both day and date under sapphire, driven by a Seagull ST16 day-date automatic with a 100m rating. Nothing else we track gets the case size right, and on a dress watch that is the whole game: a 40mm Day-Date-alike wears like a different category of watch no matter how correct the dial furniture is. See Pagani Design, model by model.

2. Pagani Design PD-1783 — the modern 40mm take Amazon ↗

About $178, fidelity 78. The same idea built four millimetres larger and sportier, on a Seiko NH36A — the most widely serviced day-date movement in the budget tier, which is a real argument if you plan to keep it. It carries the same 100m rating as the PD-1752. It scores below its stablemate only on size; if 36mm reads as too small on your wrist, this is the honest pick rather than a compromise, and it is the one of the four we can link to an exact listing.

3. Cadisen C8185 — the value pick, and the dial range Amazon ↗

About $104, fidelity 74 — the cheapest here and the widest choice. Cadisen builds the presidential-style day-date on a genuine Miyota 8285 at 40mm with sapphire and 100m, and offers the dial and case combinations this segment is actually famous for: full gold, meteorite white, Tiffany blue. If a gold Day-Date look is what you came for, start here rather than with the Paganis. Finishing is honest budget-tier — the Cadisen brand review has the QC caveats.

4. Orient RA-AA0C01B — not a President copy, and we say so Amazon ↗

About $245, fidelity 55 — the most expensive and the lowest-scoring, which needs explaining rather than hiding. It is not trying to be a Day-Date. It is the honest budget day-date automatic the community reaches for since the old Orient President left the catalogue: its own identity, an in-house F6922, an exhibition caseback, and a real watchmaking name behind the warranty. The rubric scores design closeness to the original, so a watch that deliberately is not close scores low. If what you want is a good day-date automatic rather than a Rolex silhouette, that low score is pointing you at the right watch. Note the 41.9mm case and the 50m rating, the lowest here.

The honest summary: the PD-1752 wins on the one number that defines a Day-Date, and it costs $97 less than the watch at the bottom of this page. Want gold or meteorite, or 40mm on the wrist? The Cadisen at $104. Want a proper watchmaker's movement and do not care about the Rolex look? The Orient, and ignore its fidelity score.
